Complete tubular duplication of colon in an adult: a rare cause of colovaginal fistula

Abstract: Alimentary tract duplications are uncommon congenital anomalies that usually present during the first decade of life. Complete duplication of the colon in adults is very rare and difficult to diagnose preoperatively. We report a case of a 40-year-old female with complete tubular duplication which was initially misdiagnosed as a salpingeal abscess due to colovaginal fistula.

“…Colon duplication caused chronic constipation in our case, therefore we chose complete resection of transverse, duplicated and descending colon due to atony and a significant extension of the bowel diameter. Although the resection of only duplication with small amount of native bowel has been reported 7. There were no other abnormalities in this case.…”

“…GI duplications can cause non-specific symptoms such as abdominal mass, pain and chronic constipation, and result in complications: intestinal obstruction, subvolvulus, volvulus, torsion, intussusceptions, haemorrhage, perforation and fistulas. Symptoms might be caused by duplication colon distinction, adjacent organ compression or compression of the coeliac plexus 7 8. Duplication has been extended, displaced transverse and sigmoid colon in our case.…”

In the reported case, there was a colovaginal fistula, which has not been reported in veterinary medicine and is considered extremely rare in humans 17 . A classification system for GI congenital duplications was created for humans and has been previously used in veterinary medicine.…”

“…A combination of abdominal pain and intestinal obstruction symptoms is the most common clinical manifestation of colonic duplications. Patients with colonic duplication are often accompanied by vertebral and genitourinary anomalies[ 3 , 8 ]. However, the patient in this case report did not have any other anomalies except colonic duplication.…”
