Complete nucleotide sequences of two begomoviruses infecting Madagascar periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) from Pakistan

Abstract: Though Catharanthus roseus (Madagascar periwinkle) is an ornamental plant, it is famous for its medicinal value. Its alkaloids are known for anti-cancerous properties, and this plant is studied mainly for its alkaloids. Here, this plant has been studied for its viral diseases. Complete DNA sequences of two begomoviruses infecting C. roseus originating from Pakistan were determined. The sequence of one begomovirus (clone KN4) shows the highest level of nucleotide sequence identity (86.5 %) to an unpublished vir… Show more

“…There are reports of begomovirus infection in ornamental plants worldwide (He et al 2009;Ilyas et al 2013). With regard to the Indian context, numerous reports on begomovirus infection in weeds and crops are available (Chatterjee et al 2007;Das et al 2008;Ghosh et al 2007;Jyothsna et al 2011;Khan et al 2002) but there is much less information regarding begomovirus infections in ornamental plants (Marwal et al 2013b).…”

“…Genomic DNA was isolated and subjected to rolling circle amplification (RCA) and restricted with different enzymes and with enzyme XhoI, a band of 2.8 Kb was obtained. Two clones are obtained and sequenced (KN4 and KN6) [67]. Two clones are obtained and sequenced (KN4 and KN6) [67].…”

“…Two clones are obtained and sequenced (KN4 and KN6) [67]. Two clones are obtained and sequenced (KN4 and KN6) [67]. BLAST analysis showed that the sequence of clone KN4 has less than 89% identity to an unpublished virus, Chilli leaf curl India virus (ChiLCIV-[IN:08] FM877858) and the sequence of clone KN6 has 95 and 99% identity to a new reported virus Papaya leaf crumple virus (PaLCrV) HM140369.…”

“…Several researchers' reviews on begomovirus covered different aspects of their biology, molecular biology, epidemiology and serological properties (Hanley-Bowdoin et al 1999;Harrison & Robinson, 1999;Faria et al 2000;Morales & Anderson, 2001;Ilyas et al 2013). Different known symptoms that associated with begomovirus infection have been observed in plants grown in tropical and subtropical regions of the world since the mid1800s (Wege et al 2000;Goodman 1977a;Harrison et al 1977).…”
