Complete mitochondrial genome of the apple snailPomacea diffusa(Gastropoda, Ampullariidae) with phylogenetic consideration

Abstract: We present the complete mitochondrial genome of Pomacea diffusa in this study. The results show that the mitochondrial genome is 16,640 bp in length, which is comprised of 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, and 21 tRNA genes. The nucleotide compositions of the light strand are 39.62% of A, 30.13% of T, 16.02% of C, and 14.24% of G. Except eight tRNA (Glu, Gly, Trp, Cys, Tyr, Met, Thr, Val) on the light strand, the rest are encoded on the heavy strand. All the protein-coding genes start with ATC initiatio… Show more

“…The total nucleotide length of the 13 PCGs in P. bilineatus is 10,839 bp in length, and most of the PCGs start with a typical ATN codon, except for the cox1 and atp8 genes, which start with TTG and GTG, an accepted canonical mitochondrial start codon for invertebrate mitogenomes [36,37,38,39]. The stop codons (TAA and TAG) are utilized in these PCGs.…”

“…Mitochondrial genes overlap and serve to compact the mitogenomes. Each of the snails possessed five overlap sites totaling 11 bp in P. canaliculata , 27 bp in P. diffusa and 13 bp in P. maculate similar to other mitogenomes [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 , 43 , 44 , 45 ].…”

“…The codon alignment ATP6 for species E. maclovinus, N. coriiceps, C. rastrospinosus and C. aceratus show that GTG codes for methionine, as the start codon for the protein. GTG which is originally known for coding the amino acid valine has been accepted as a mitochondrion start codon for invertebrate mitogenomes [45][46][47]. A common feature with the species that have GTG as a start codon is that N. coriiceps, E. maclovinus, C. rastrospinosus have genes coding for myoglobin, where the latter is devoid of haemoglobin.…”
