Complete Genome Sequences of Five Burkholderia Strains with Biocontrol Activity against Various Lettuce Pathogens

Abstract: Numerous bacterial strains from the Burkholderia cepacia complex display biocontrol activity. Here, we report the complete genome sequences of five Burkholderia strains isolated from soil. Biosynthetic gene clusters responsible for the production of antimicrobial compounds were found in the genome of these strains, which display biocontrol activity against various lettuce pathogens.

“…The researchers showed that siderophore, indole acetic acid, hydrogen cyanide, salicylic acid production and E. clocae strain PS14 had the highest effect on controlling the agent both in vitro and in vivo. Similarly, as in this study, Burkholderia cepecia had biocontrol activity against various lettuce pathogens including S. sclerotiorum and Burkholderia strains harbor for the biosynthesis of pyrrolnitrin, burkholdins and cepacin (Biessy et al, 2022). In this study, rhizobacteria also increased plant growth.…”

“…Genomic DNA libraries were prepared using PacBio SMRTbell Express Template Prep kit (Pacific Biosciences, Menlo Park, CA, USA) with the Pseudomonas strains displaying the strongest inhibitory activity against S. sclerotiorum . Genome sequencing was performed at the Integrated Microbiome Resource (Halifax, NS, Canada) using a PacBio Sequel sequencer (v3 chemistry) as described in Biessy et al (2022) . The genomes were assembled using the Flye v2.8.1 long-read assembler ( Kolmogorov et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Two Chryseobacterium strains (B21-013 and B21-037) were isolated from agricultural fields located in the Montérégie region (Quebec, Canada) as part of a search for plant-beneficial bacteria able to suppress various lettuce bacterial pathogens. These two strains were isolated as previously described ( 9 ). Briefly, 10 soil samples were collected as close as possible to the plant roots of various vegetable crop species grown on two agricultural farms located in Dunham and Brigham (Quebec, Canada).…”
