Complete genome sequence of Streptococcus troglodytae TKU31 isolated from the oral cavity of a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes)

Abstract: Streptococcus troglodytae TKU31 was isolated from the oral cavity of a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and was found to be the most closely related species of the mutans group streptococci to Streptococcus mutans. The complete sequence of TKU31 genome consists of a single circular chromosome that is 2,097,874 base pairs long and has a G + C content of 37.18%. It possesses 2082 coding sequences (CDSs), 65 tRNAs and five rRNA operons (15 rRNAs). Two clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, six ins… Show more

“…Of the five remaining BGCs, all of which encode unknown products, BGC1 stands out for being confined to Streptococcus species found in the mouths of primates, including humans. Database searching showed that gene clusters having the same organization as BGC1 were found in 25 S. mutans and two other Streptococcus strains, S. troglodytae TKU31 39 , and S. macacae NCTC 11558 40 (Supplementary Fig. 4).…”

“…There are collaborative efforts between human medical professionals (doctors and dentists) and veterinarians including the great ape heart project 30 and chimpanzee dental project (collaboration between KUPRI and Tsurumi University, e.g. 31 ). The collaboration and "One Health approach" 32 are particularly fruitful in conservation of endangered great ape species in captivity.…”

“…Researchers and veterinarians at the Primate Research Institute of Kyoto University and human dental professionals at the Tsurumi University School of Dental Medicine have collaborated in the "Chimpanzee Dental Project" to improve oral health in chimpanzees and they found new strains of oral bacteria closely related to the mutans streptococci group. 4 During this project, human dental professionals had the opportunity to treat apical periodontitis in a female chimpanzee (Figure 1A). The endodontic treatment used in humans was adapted for this chimpanzee.…”
