Complete Genome Sequence of Canine Papillomavirus Type 16

Abstract: Papillomaviruses are epitheliotropic, circular, double-stranded DNA viruses within the family Papillomaviridae that are associated with benign and malignant tumors in humans and animals. We report the complete genome sequence of canine papillomavirus type 16 identified within multiple pigmented cutaneous plaques and squamous cell carcinoma from an intact female Basenji dog.

“…Canine papillomaviruses belonging to the Chi genus seem to show a cutaneous tropism and are largely associated with pigmented plaques, with only a minority of virus types being identified in malignant lesions (Tobler et al., ; Luff et al., , ). Recently, CPV12 and CPV16 were identified in viral plaques from two Basenji dogs, which progressed to metastatic SCC (Luff et al., ).…”

“…Seventeen CPV types have been proposed and grouped into genera Lambdapapillomavirus (CPV1 and 6), Taupapillomavirus (CPV2, 7, 13 and 17) and Chipapillomavirus (CPV3,4,5,8,9,10,11,12,14,15 and 16) (Table 1). CPV1, long known as the canine oral papillomavirus (CoPV), is associated with oral papillomatosis (Porcellato et al, 2014;Sancak et al, 2015), together with Pigmented plaques, cutaneous SCC NC_026640 Luff et al (2015Luff et al ( , 2015 SCC, squamous cell carcinoma; XSCID,X-linked combined severe immunodefficient.…”
