Complete genome sequence of a novel sea otterpox virus

Abstract: Members of the Poxviridae family are large, double-stranded DNA viruses that replicate in the cytoplasm of their host cells. The subfamily Chordopoxvirinae contains viruses that infect a wide range of vertebrates including marine mammals within the Balaenidae, Delphinidae, Mustelidae, Odobenidae, Otariidae, Phocidae, and Phocoenidae families. Recently, a novel poxvirus was found in a northern sea otter pup (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) that stranded in Alaska in 2009. The phylogenetic relationships of marine mammal… Show more

“…The metazoan poxin sequences from moth and butterfly genomes ( Lepidoptera , bottom) share homology throughout the entire poxin protein and exhibit identical 2′3′ cGAMP degradation activity, but the alignment with viral poxins does not allow definitive assignment of the catalytic residues. Phylogram schematics are based on previous analyses 5255 . b , Coomasie-stained SDS-PAGE analysis of recombinant SUMO2-tagged poxin homologue proteins.…”

“…The PPV species constitute a genus among the subfamily Chordopoxvirinae of the family Poxviridae . Poxviral DNA genomes can vary in size from 128 (seal PPV) to 360 (Canarypox virus) kilobases (kb) and contain inverted terminal repeats (ITRs) of up to 13 kb ( Asif et al, 2021 ; Jacob et al, 2018 ). PPV can easily be delineated from Orthopoxviruses by their unique virion architecture (regular crisscross tubular core structure) and the high G + C content (64 %) of the genome ( Rziha and Büttner, 2021 ).…”
