Complete excision of a giant thyroid goiter in posterior mediastinum

Abstract: Intrathoracic goiter is commonly located in the anterior mediastinum. Here we report a case of a 58-year-old Chinese male in whom we successfully removed the intrathoracic goiter and eased his dyspnea by a right posterolateral thoracotomy approach. Posterior mediastinal thyroid goiter with mediastinal compressive symptoms is an indication of surgery.

“…Intrathoracic goitre -presence of the goitre in the mediastinum -is usually seen in the anterior mediastinum and rarely in the posterior (10%-15%) (1). Mediastinal goitres can be primary or secondary The Clinical Respiratory Journal (arising from the thyroid tissue and elongating into the thorax) (2). Although mediastinal goitres can be asymptomatic, they can be symptomatic due to the compression of the intrathoracic organs such as dyspnea and dysphagia.…”
