Complete eversion and prolapse of bladder concurrent with primary adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Complete eversion and prolapse of the urinary bladder is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, the imaging findings of complete bladder eversion have not been documented in the literature. Here, we report a case of complete eversion and prolapse of the urinary bladder demonstrated on MRI. Concurrent primary adenocarcinoma was found in the thickened wall of the everted urinary bladder.

“…Multiparous postmenopausal women appear to be at the highest risk (Mastropietro et al, 2002;Kalorin et al, 2009;Kim et al, 2010). Bladder eversion through a vesicovaginal fistula has also been described (Dunn et al, 2004) as a result of bladder adenocarcinoma (Kim et al, 2006), due to self-removal of an indwelling Foley catheter (Acharya and Mishra, 2007), during parturition (Heyns, 1941) and after hemipelvectomy (Lowe et al, 2010).…”

“…Senility, obesity, and multiple labours could be possible predisposing factors to eversion and prolapse of bladder. Other reported causes of bladder eversion and prolapse in human were pulling out of Foley's catheter [ 12 ] and bladder eversion concurrent with uterine prolapse [ 13 ] and primary adenocarcinoma [ 14 ]. Trauma as a cause of bladder eversion and prolapse as seen in this case is not widely reported.…”
