Complete determination of the state of elliptically polarized light by electron-ion vector correlations

Abstract: We propose a method, molecular polarimetry, applicable to an extended VUV-x-ray range, allowing us to determine the complete state of elliptically polarized light, including the challenging disentanglement of the circular and unpolarized components. It relies on the determination of the molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions derived from electron-ion velocity vector correlations in dissociative photoionization of simple molecules. The high accuracy of the full set of Stokes parameters determinatio… Show more

“…As pointed out previously [10,14], the analytical expression of the MFPAD also encodes the complete polarization state of the ionizing radiation in terms of the normalized Stokes parameters 1 2 3 ( , , ) s s s , where 1 2 ( , ) s s and 3 ( ) s characterize the linearly and circularly polarized intensities, respectively, and P s s s = + + is the degree of polarization [15]. This remarkable property underlies the 'molecular polarimetry' (MP) method [16] which is tunable and available over a spectral range spanning from VUV to x-ray photon energies [14,17,18], where polarimetry is a challenging task. We recently applied the MP method to retrieve the complete polarization state of individual high-order harmonics (HHs) in an attosecond pulse train (APT) produced by the HHG-based XUV source of the PLFA facility of CEA-Saclay [19], for different schemes involving symmetry breaking in the generation process [20,21].…”

“…For these experiments, we chose process (I) which possesses fingerprint properties to act as an efficient 'polarimeter'. As MP requires the knowledge of the CDAD [16], the results reported in the present manuscript can be taken as references.…”

“…This would be a complementary approach from the molecular polarimetry data deduced from molecular--frame photoelectron angular distributions (MF--PADs), recently demonstrated 63 and valid in the dissociative ionization continuum range of small molecules, i.e., above 20 eV or so. We therefore hope in this context, to contribute to the expansion of the active field of polarization dependent short wavelength photodynamics with short pulses.…”

“…The original method and results of Ref. 228 was developed further to completely characterize the state of elliptically-polarized light by electron-ion vector correlations [238], and finally to realise the complete polarimetry of high harmonics [239]. These methods have recently been applied to HHG generated under O. Cohen's 'bicircular' fields [240], providing a clear evidence for depolarization of high harmonics.…”
