Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use Among US Adults With Headache or Migraine: Results from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey

Abstract: Although CAM is used by many sufferers of headache/migraine, the use of CAM specifically for the treatment of headache/migraine is relatively low in the United States. The study also assesses the key differences of CAM use among headache/migraine sufferers in NHIS 2012 compared with those in NHIS 2007, and identifies shortfalls in the evidence-base of several CAM modalities used by U.S. adults for headache/migraine. “…Functional limitation of a joint referred to being limited in performing any usual activity due to arthritis or joint symptoms (yes/no question). A comorbidity scale was calculated as a sum of arthritis comorbidities . These summed scores ranged from 0 to 10 and were generated by allocating one point each to the following conditions: heart disease (coronary heart disease, ever had a heart attack, other heart condition), hypertension, pulmonary disease (emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, or chronic bronchitis), mental health concern in the last 12 months (depression, anxiety, other mental health disorder), neurological issues (recurring headache, memory loss, stroke, other neurological problem), weak/failing kidneys, or ever diagnosed with cancer or diabetes.…”

“…54 Such marital stress may explain our observed association between divorced marital status and migraine prevalence, especially for women where the odds of migraine were highest for the divorced subgroup. 56 In terms of perceived social status, the odds of some medical conditions have been documented to be upwards of 3.7-fold when comparing the bottom rung of the social ladder to the higher rungs. Women with a serious illness were at greater risk of divorce or separation post-diagnosis than unwell men, and abandonment negatively impacted quality of care and life.…”

“…It is reported that migraine sufferers are more likely to use CAM than general population in the United States [7]. Half of headache sufferers used CAM in conjunction with conventional treatment and patients with severe headache were keen on using CAM therapies in the US population.…”

“…These results indicated that migraineurs with increased duration of headache, low educational level, and income were more likely to seek for alternative therapies. In the study of Zhang et al [7], the authors analyzed CAM use among US adults with headache or migraine. The reasons for CAM use among migraine or other headache sufferers were examined and they reported that the greater the severity of headache, the more likely sufferers would use CAM [8].…”
