Complementary and Alternative Medicine Use in Radiotherapy: What Are Patients Using?

Abstract: CAM is commonly used by patients with cancer. CAMs, particularly antioxidants, are being taken which could negate the underlying free-radical tumorcidal effects of radiotherapy. Oncologists need to have greater awareness of this use and of its potential adverse consequences.

“…This may be problematic as media reports are often skewed toward a positive view on CAM. 28 Limited studies have investigated the trend and reasons for high CAM use, whether there are regional variations in CAM use among rural cancer patients 25,29 and whether information seeking behavior and disclosure of CAM use is comparable to metropolitan cohorts.…”

“…Nevertheless, though there remains much uncertainty as to the function of certain antioxidants and their effect on different primary tumor types, many patients will choose to use these alternative therapies on their own to reduce the side effects of radiotherapy. 17 Thus, a clinician's understanding of the role of antioxidants in the different physiologic pathways of radiation-induced skin injury is essential to properly advising his or her patient.…”

“…Depending on an author's perspective, the number of CAM therapies can range from four to 16 [7]. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) defines CAM as a group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not currently considered conventional medicine [4,8,9]. As so defined, CAM has a broad range of implications.…”
