Background: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is prevalent among chronic diseases like Diabetes mellitus (DM). Therefore, the aim was to study the pattern of CAM use among Type2DM in our set up.Methods: The study was done in diabetic patients attending OPD of Government medical college hospital over a period of 2 months. Patients who gave consent were subjected to a pre-structured questionnaire which consisted of two parts pertaining to socio-demographic profile and CAM usage details.Results: Out of 280 patients enrolled in the study, 110 admitted being CAM users along with conventional Anti-Diabetic treatment. The CAM users were mostly females (56.36%) and were from rural background (70.90%). CAM was prevalent in educated patients (90.90%) more than illiterates (9.09%). Ayurveda (44.54%) was the most common type of CAM used and relatives (58.18%) provided main source of CAM information. 32.72% patients thought that CAM is safe, effective (20.90%) and less costly (19.09%). Only 16.36% patients disclosed regarding their CAM usage to the attending physician while majority (83.63%) were non-revealers. The results suggest that patients should be encouraged to reveal to their physician regarding CAM as it can avoid possibility of interactions.Conclusions: CAM is prevalent in T2DM and more so in females from rural areas. Ayurveda was the most widely type of CAM used and majority of patients did not disclose to the treating physician regarding CAM usage.

BackgroundYoga and Naturopathy (Y&N) is one of the approved Complementary and Traditional systems of Medicine practiced in India. Unlike other systems, it is a drugless system aimed to optimize and facilitate the inherent ability of the human body to heal itself. There is lack of literature on the type of patients seeking Yoga and Naturopathy treatments in India. This study was designed with an objective to assess the morbidity profile of the in-patients treated in a Naturopathy and Yoga hospital.MethodsDescriptive study design based on clinical case records. Six hundred and four cases treated as in-patients between April 2017 and July 2018 was analyzed.ResultsThe average age of the patients was 47.4 (SD ± 16.1) years, with 56% were females and 44% males. About 50 different types of morbidity ranging from general rejuvenation to chronic diseases had been reported. Highest reported diseases were chronic in nature, with higher reporting for multiple system morbidity, followed by Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Arthritis, and Back pain. Variations were observed in the morbidities based on age and gender of the patients. The median duration of treatment was 8 days.ConclusionsPatients seek Yoga & Naturopathy care mainly for chronic conditions, further observations on treatment outcomes, quality of life, and treatment seeking behavior can be explored for the efficacy and feasibility of Yoga & Naturopathy care in managing chronic diseases.

Objective: The study aimed to determine the correlation between pain severity, pain beliefs, pain coping, and attitudes toward complementary and alternative treatments among physical therapy patients. Methods: This cross-sectional and analytical was conducted in a physical therapy and rehabilitation hospital in north-eastern Turkey. The sample consisted of 150 physical therapy patients. Data were collected using Demographic Information Form, Pain Beliefs Questionnaire, Pain Coping Questionnaire, and Attitudes towards Complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire. Spearman’s Correlation Analysis and Multiple Linear Regression Analysis were used in data analysis. Results: The study revealed that the patients had negative attitudes towards complementary (13.64 ± 4.00) and alternative medicine use (13.18 ± 4.14). The scores were moderate for the patients' psychological (18.62 ± 3.69) and organic belief (33.68 ± 5.17). A significant correlation was determined between patients’ attitudes towards complementary medical treatment and conventional medical treatment for pain (p=0.020). The patients had moderate pain intensity (5.70±2.44), and there was a significant correlation between pain intensity and attitudes towards alternative medicine (p=0.012). Conclusion: Physical therapy patients’ attitudes towards complementary and alternative medicine are associated with pain coping and severity. The patients should be educated to cope with pain and manage it by health professionals.
