Coordinated, multidisciplinary treatment for women with eating disorders is consistently recommended as maximally effective, but few studies have considered the patient experience. This qualitative study examined the experiences of women receiving such care in an outpatient setting. Using an interpretive description methodology, we conducted 12 in-depth interviews with participants who were diagnosed with an eating disorder and were receiving team-based treatment. Patients uniformly advocated for the coordinated, multidisciplinary treatment approach. Analysis of participants’ experiences yielded four categories: relying on the lifeline of communication, supporting autonomy, drawing on individual strengths, and valuing synergy. These findings build on previous research emphasizing the importance of autonomy support and connectedness in the recovery process from an eating disorder. Findings highlight the importance of nurses to support a multidisciplinary care approach to working with this patient population; these women’s voices also support a treatment approach that, despite being widely recommended, is vastly understudied and underutilized.

Introduction: Cancer patients are increasingly combining touch therapies (e.g., remedial massage, lymphatic massage, and/or reflexology) with conventional treatments to deal with the impact of their cancer and treatments on their physical and mental well-being. To understand the impact of integrative oncology services on cancer patients, it is essential to explore the impact that various types of integrative oncology services have on cancer patients. Aims: This paper presents cancer patients’ experiences with touch therapies in a community-based cancer support center and to identify opportunities for better access to these practices and service provision in Australia. Methods: A random selection of cancer patients (n=36) receiving touch therapies at a rural/regional community cancer center completed mixed-methods mail surveys regarding the use of touch therapies, their satisfaction, and the impact on pain, fatigue, nausea and overall well-being. Results: Findings indicated that these services helped manage both physical and emotional symptoms. Of the participants experiencing pain and fatigue, findings revealed that touch therapies assisted with pain in 90% of participants and with fatigue in 70%. Conclusion: Given the increased and continued use of touch therapies by individuals with cancer, cancer centers should consider establishing touch therapy services or provide referrals to touch therapy services that can assist with symptom management and improve quality care. By more clearly understanding the benefits of the different types of integrative oncology interventions, patients with cancer receive more tailored and effective interventions throughout of their cancer journey.

Purpose of reviewThis review covers articles in 2018 and early 2019 that employed the concept of networks and social interactions in research on how patients with cancer cope, receive and respond to medical treatment and allied support. The use of social aspects, and more formally the method of social network analysis for research on social aspects of cancer is quite new. Although we paid special attention to articles that used formal social network analysis, we noted that those articles cover just over a quarter of the material we reviewed. Most articles that incorporated social aspects of cancer did not intend to formalize those aspects but treated the network concept as a way to characterize social support, social influence, or social responsibilities. Recent findingsWe identified 74 recent articles that mentioned the network concept for research about cancer, excluding gene interaction networks. Of those 74 articles, 21 measured specific relationships between individuals or organizations and/or attributes of those individuals or organizations connected to participants or to others. Primary foci of the network analysis and nonnetwork analysis studies were breast cancer, social support for patients, and they usually at least considered sex and age of the cancer patients/survivors. Social media received some attention, and there were some studies considering quality of life and mental health. Among network analysis studies, size of network and number of people providing emotional/informational/ instrumental support occurred in more than a couple studies but not the majority. There was little similarity among studies -whether using network analysis or not -suggesting that theory building and methodological development are in early stages.
