Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Therapy Use in a Diverse New Mexican Population

Abstract: Prevalence of CAMT is high in a diverse population of patients. Older respondents were more likely to use CAMT in addition to prescription medications, and younger respondents were more likely to use CAMT instead of prescription medications. Providers need to consider CAMT use when discussing treatment options with patients.

“…Our findings corroborate those of previous research in that the parents' income and level of education are significant predictors of the recourse to alternative therapies [36,38]. “…Our study demonstrates that CAM use among cancer patients in Italy is fairly widespread, with nearly half of those interviewed (48.9%) reporting an ongoing or recent use of CAM. Patients suffering from cancer are more likely to use CAM at some point in their disease history however, many available publications show that unconventional medicine is routinely used by many other categories of patients: the average lifetime prevalence for UK patients reported by Posadzky P et al [ 7 ] is 51.8%; another work published in 2015 [ 16 ] analyzing the data from 263 questionnaires completed by New Mexican patients attending outpatient clinics for different diseases (heart failure, HIV, hepatitis, etc. ), found a 56% incidence of CAM use with a significantly higher rate among females with a high educational level, who declared that they use CAM for general wellness and disease prevention.…”

“…Literature-based evidences exist indicating that the practice of CAM is common in most developing countries including India (Singh et al, 2004;Jadhav et al, 2011;Roy et al, 2015), Malaysia (Lee et al, 2007;Sivadasan et al, 2014;Silvanathan & Low 2015), Africa (Matheka & Demaio 2013;McFarlane, 2015), and Mexico (Valenzuela-Antelo et al, 2011;Marshik et al, 2016). This is therefore suggests that CAM is an important aspect of public health care in these countries.…”
