Complement Inhibiting Properties of Dragon’s Blood from Croton draco

Abstract: The latex of Croton draco, its extracts and several latex components have been investigated for their influence on both classical (CP) and alternative (AP) activation pathways of the complement system using a hemolytic assay. The best inhibition was found for the classical pathway. The latex, ethyl acetate and ethyl ether extracts exhibited extremely high inhibition on the CP (94, 90 and 77%, respectively) at a concentration of 1 mg/ml. The flavonoid myricitrin, the alkaloid taspine and the cyclopeptides P1 an… Show more

“…Taspine (14), an unusual alkaloid with a dilactone structure resembling elagic acid and one nitrogen atom not included in a heterocyclic ring, was found in the red latex of three species, C. draco, 33,108 C. lechleri 9,109 and C. palanostigma. 110 Taspine has been obtained also from plant sources of benzylisoquinolines and biogenetically related alkaloids, such as Berberidaceae and Magnoliaceae.…”

“…From the red latex of C. draco 108 and C. panamensis 126 myricitrin (myricetin-3-O-rhamnoside) was isolated. Leaves of C. cajucara yielded kaempferol-3,7-dimethyl ether and 3,4',7-trimethyl ether, 50 while shoots of C. schiedeanus contain quercetin-3,7-dimethyl ether.…”

“…In addition, it was also isolated in the leaves Eugenia L. (Myrtaceae; Schmeda-Hirschmannet et al, 1987) and in the latex of Croton draco Schltdl. (Euphorbiaceae; Tsacheva et al, 1987).…”

“…1) is a flavonoid that belongs to the flavonol subgroup. This flavonoid is found in fruits of genus Pouteria (Ma et al, 2004) and Manilkara zapota (Ma et al, 2003), leaves of Eugenia uniflora (Schmeda-Hirschmann et al, 1987), and latex of Croton draco (Tsacheva et al, 2004). In addition, myricitrin has been reported as having an antioxidant action (Edenharder and Grü nhage, 2003).…”
