Competitiveness of local food: an empirical analysis of the tomato market dynamics

Abstract: Local food has become the foci of food self-sufficiency and sustainable development. This work explores the dynamic interactions between local and imported food in Hawaii, which is a typical small, open economy and an ideal market for a local food system study. Retail scanner data of three major grocery chain stores are used to construct a time series of prices and quantities for local and imported grape and cherry tomatoes in one year (52 weeks). Vector Autoregressive model and impulse response functions are … Show more

“…High food prices prompt consumers to seek lower-cost alternatives and lower income populations tend to be more sensitive to food prices (Fang et al, 2018). Additionally, food demand patterns and nutrient intake are strongly correlated as any change in food prices and/or income impacts food consumption, thus affecting individuals' nutrient availability (Hahn and Davis, 2014;Lin et al, 2014).…”

“…We made adjustments in the localization parameter using Xie's method. Even then, the prices of crops for parameter adjustment and some other prices were influenced by the market, and large area production would lead to a reduced price in the long run when the supply will exceed the demand (Fang, Huang, and Leung 2018;Cui et al 2019). In addition, with respect to the indicators of the ecological subsystem and that were chosen through PCA, there was no evidence to demonstrate that the indicators of the ecological and economic subsystems were irrelevant.…”

“…However, when it comes to the extreme ends of the process, relations become impersonal (Busch, 1997). It is also important to acknowledge that locally produced food has become the foci of food self-sufficiency among some consumers (Fang et al, 2018), therefore, it is important to understand local food systems to establish the dynamics of interactions between the various stakeholders of these food systems.…”
