Competitive biosorption of heavy metals from aqueous solutions onto Streptomyces rimosus

Abstract: The aim of this study is the simultaneous biosorption of Cd +2 and Ni +2 on a dead biomass, Streptomyces rimosus pretreated with NaOH (0,1 M). Kinetic tests were carried out for the binary mixture (cadmium-nickel) during 6 hours contact time to ensure that balance was reached. The amounts adsorbed at equilibrium were 22.8 mg Ni 2+ /g and 9.86 mg Cd 2+ /g biomass, respectively. The biosorption depends mainly by some parameters, such as the pH, the initial concentration of metal and the initial concentration of… Show more

“…It can be seen graphically that a saturation point is reached where no further adsorption can occur afterwards, this is a plateau which characterizes the Langmuir 8in Table 1. Three cases of adsorption can be distinguished according to the value of RL, the adsorption is unfavorable when the separation factor value is strictly superior to one, if the RL=1 the adsorption is said to be linear, when 0<RL<1 the adsorption is said to be favorable (Yous et al, 2018). The measured values for the studied dyes are less than one and more than 0 (RL= 0.053 for MB and 0.909 for MO).…”

“…This confirms the results obtained by XRD (Figure 1). Both bands at 1,616 and 1,630 cm -1 are due to the bending vibration of the hydroxyl (OH -) (H-O-H) (Nikcevic et al, 2004;Yous et al, 2018;Aines and Rossman, 1984;Boughzala and Bouzouita, 2015). A series of vibrations was observed in the 3,200-3,550 cm -1 region which could be assigned to OH group vibrations bound by hydrogen bonds (O-H asymmetrical and symmetrical stretching vibrations).…”

“…The maximum concentrations of cadmium and iron in industrial liquid effluent discharges are 0.2 and 3 mg/L, respectively (Ouyahia 2006). In general, these two metals are not found separately but together as a mixture in wastewater (Yous et al 2018). It therefore becomes essential to find and develop feasible and sustainable wastewater treatment methods.…”

“…This technology has been used as an alternative method of removing harmful toxic heavy metals by taking advantage of biological adsorption properties [5]. Biosorbents, or adsorbents used in biosorption, are prepared using various types of biomass including algae, aquatic plants, moss, bacteria, and sewage-sludge [6][7][8]. Sewage sludge is one of the most abundant types of microbial biomass.…”
