Competitive Arsenate and Phosphate Adsorption on Ferrihydrite as Described by the CD-MUSIC Model

Abstract: The solubility and bioavailability of arsenic in the environment are to a large extent governed by adsorption reactions with iron (hydr)oxides, the extent of which is affected by competitive interactions with other ions, for example, phosphate. Here, batch experiments were performed with ferrihydrite suspensions to determine the adsorption of arsenate [As(V)] and phosphate (PO4) at different As(V)–PO4 ratios. A surface complexation model based on the Charge Distribution MUltisite Ion Complexation (CD-MUSIC)… Show more

“…Consistently, higher initial Fe(II) concentrations in the solution enhance the formation of Fe (oxyhydr)oxides and As removal from solution (Fig. 1e) owing to the strong affinity of As for these mineral species (Gustafsson and Antelo, 2022;Lan et al, 2018;Raven et al, 1998;Ying et al, 2012).…”

“…Increasing evidence indicates that Sb exposure can lead to depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment, and sleep-related disorders . The main sources of Sb(V) contamination are from mining and smelting activities, which have particularly affected surface water in mining areas and tailings. , Ferrihydrite (Fh), an important Fe (oxyhydr)oxide, is often found in association with Sb(V) and has the ability to immobilize it by forming strong complexes. Consequently, Fh plays a crucial role in determining the mobility and fate of Sb in aquatic systems.…”
