Competition, Gender Equality, and Doping in Sports in the Red Queen Effect Perspective

Abstract: The nature of sports is characterized by a strong competitive component that generates inequalities among athletes at different levels, specifically in relation to gender, technology, and doping. These inequalities can be represented according to the Red Queen effect perspective, which has been previously hypothesized in other competitive environments (evolutionary biology and economics, for instance). The Red Queen effect considers each competitive environment to require a constant effort to maintain a positi… Show more

“…First of all, enhancing performance through illicit substances may have adverse health effects at the cardiovascular, psychiatric, endocrine, neurologic, hepatic, renal, or musculoskeletal levels, but these negative consequences are often underestimated [ 58 ]. Moreover, apart from the health risks, doping is a moral issue [ 59 , 60 ]. Framing doping as a moral problem allows one to examine the influence of morality on the likelihood of engaging in doping behaviour [ 19 ].…”

“…The estimated SRMR, d ULS, d G, and chi-square values were larger than the in saturated models. Thus, our model is coherent, and we may assume that protein-based alimentation might be included in everyone's life, especially in athletes' diets [77].…”

“…In public, females are also less frequently encouraged to participate in sport events than males [41]. Cultures or stereotypes have reinforced these inequalities [42] and mass media has fed this tendency by emphasizing the femininity of athletes or covering sportspeople unequally [34,43]. This study attempts to shift our focus from these phenomena to solutions that address this inequality by testing how mixed-gender competitions mitigate a gender-specific disadvantage in sports-the heightened competitive pressure on female sportspersons.…”
