Competition and mutualism among the gut helminths of a mammalian host

Abstract: Most animal species are infected with multiple parasite species; however, the role of interspecific parasite interactions in influencing parasite dynamics and shaping parasite communities has been unclear. Although laboratory studies have found evidence of cross-immunity, immunosuppression and competition, analyses of hosts in the field have generally concluded that parasite communities are little more than random assemblages. Here we present evidence of consistent interspecific interactions in a natural mamma… Show more

“…The high seasonal variability of the immune response points to the significant costs of mounting it, and has clear implications for the evolutionary ecology of host-parasite interactions. Other parasites will be affected by, and contribute to, the hosts' immune status in varying ways (Lello et al 2004;Cattadori et al 2007a,b). This study provides some new insights into parasite-host dynamics and for our studies sets the scene for future experimental investigations of the interaction of T. retortaeformis with the community of parasites in rabbits.…”

“…In addition, or alternatively, to this main effect, it is possible that concurrent parasite infection exerts a synergistic effect. Although not easy to detect (Behnke et al 2005) such interactions have recently been documented for protozoa (Bajer et al 2002) and helminths (Lello et al 2004) in wild mammal populations. That is, infection with one species enhances proliferation of another species.…”

“…In earlier work we were able to detect evidence of a network of interspecific parasite interactions among the gut helminth community of the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) [4]. However, in all the statistical analyses of these helminths, month emerged as a strongly significant term [4].…”
