Competing Causes of Death for Women With Breast Cancer and Change Over Time From 1975 to 2003

Abstract: This study was to determine whether the proportion of death due to breast cancer changed over time in different cohorts of women diagnosed with breast cancer. We identified 316,149 women with breast cancer at age 20 or older during 1975-2003 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 9 tumor registries in the United States. Logistic regression models were used to assess the effects of time period on the likelihood of dying because of breast cancer as underlying cause of death, adjusting for other fac… Show more

“…One should note that the risk of dying from diseases other than breast cancer increases with time since diagnosis 38,39 , especially after ten years. Since the median follow-up time in our study was much shorter, we already expected a larger proportion of deaths (82% of total of deaths) due to breast cancer compared to other studies.…”

“…Death rates from breast cancer have decreased steadily since 1990 due to improved rates of early detection and treatment advances [2]. Recent improvements in treatment include therapies that specifically target estrogen metabolism or Her2/neu receptor-induced signaling.…”
