Competencies for structured professional development of neonatal nurses in South Africa

Abstract: Competent nursing staff in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can make the difference between life and death for sick and premature babies. Unique challenges exist in neonatal practice owing to a high-risk period of adaptation in the days after birth, whether the context is resource limited or equipped with the newest technology. Globally, in 2016, 2.7 million babies died in their first month of life, and an additional 2.6 million were stillborn. [1] Fifteen million babies (1 in 10 live births) are born p… Show more

“…In the case of premature birth this adaptation occurs in the absence of mature organs. Care of premature infants should support or even replace bodily functions which are not yet ready for extra uterine life, for example ventilation (nCPAP, mechanical ventilation, oscillation), electrolyte and acid-base balance (ventilation, replacement of electrolytes, fluid) and many more (Hillman & Kallupur, 2012;Scheepers et al, 2020).…”

“…The provision of neonatal care to high-risk neonates in the NICU through inadequately trained nurses can threaten neonatal health and safety and ultimately increase neonatal mortality and morbidity rates [9,10]. Therefore, devising training measures to substitute for on-site NICU clinical practicum is crucial [11,12].…”
