Competencies and Performance of Engineering Professors: Evidence from a Brazilian Public University

Abstract: This research aims to analyze the influence of Engineering professors’ competencies on their performance, as perceived by Engineering students and graduates from a Brazilian federal public university. Regarding methodology, a set of Engineering educators’ competencies were proposed, identified, and validated by exploratory factor analysis (EFA), parallel analysis, internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha), and partial confirmatory factor analysis (PCFA) in a sample of 139 Engineering students and graduates (engi… Show more

“…Given that soft skills are important in engineering and that the competency-based model is very suitable for these disciplines, it is convenient to determine which soft skills engineers must have and develop. These competences must be acquired by students but are also necessary in teachers (Carvalho, Corrêa, Carvalho, Vieira, Stankowitz, and Kolotelo, 2018).…”

“…Furthermore, it is the Higher Education Institutions' responsibility to maintain themselves updated with materials and teaching methods that encourage the knowledge and the due deepening in the most distinct knowledge fields that Production Engineering provides (Mello & Santos, 2015). The education in engineering is undergoing a transformation period, where new curriculums are based on learning through more integrated activities and sharing of past experiences (Carvalho et al, 2018).…”
