The successes and failures of water reuse schemes are shaped by complex interrelationships between technological, economic, and socio-political factors. However, it has long been recognized that the main challenges to more effective water management are largely social rather than technical. This article reviews the recent literature (2007–2017) to analyze driving factors associated with farmers’ concerns and public perception of reclaimed wastewater for irrigation. The aim of the paper is to synthetize how both environmental and health risks and the yuck factor could be addressed in order to promote mutual understanding between farmers and the public. Results show: (1) how farmers and the public perceive environmental and health risks in a similar way, (2) how the yuck factor is more noticeable for the public than farmers, and (3) how constructed wetlands, reclaimed water exchange consortiums, product certification, and direct site visits to water reuse infrastructure could be promoted in order to foster understanding between farmers and the public. The article concludes by providing key research questions for managers and public authorities relating to how to focus on the study of technical and social issues related to water reuse.

Growing global scarcity of water is forcing a change in their management models and the need to implement good governance schemes, understood as the implementation of legal, institutional and economic mechanisms that enable the efficient organisation of the activity developed by all of the agents involved in water management. In this sense, one of the greatest achievements in Spanish hydraulic history is the organisation called Mancomunidad de los Canales del Taibilla (MCT), whose existence usually goes unnoticed in one of the most arid regions of Europe: the South-East of Spain.Therefore, this study will analyse the MCT management model, based on the good governance of water, as well as their positive socio-economic impacts on population and areas supplied as a consequence of the quality and continuity of the urban supply, which has been extraordinarily beneficial for resolving health and hygiene and comfort problems. This is all thanks to the continual search for new sources of supply, in addition to efforts to improve leakage control, modernisation of management, educational campaigns implemented and the efficient and sustainable use of resources without financial unbalances.

La isleidad es un concepto que puede ser entendido tanto por sus connotaciones positivas de apertura al exterior como por las negativas de cierre respecto a los territorios de allende mar. En los estudios sobre islas se ha trabajado a partir de ambos enfoques, mientras algunos autores hacen hincapié en la capacidad de atracción de las islas como destinos turísticos, otros se centran en sus dificultades para generar economías de escala que impulsen la actividad económica. El presente trabajo pretende matizar los dos enfoques tomando como ejemplo diferentes estrategias de producción del espacio turístico en las Islas Baleares. En el caso que nos ocupa, la imagen de las islas como paraísos ha impulsado la actividad turística y ha convertido el archipiélago en uno de los principales destinos del mediterráneo español ofreciendo al mercado plazas turísticas en volúmenes equiparables o superiores a los de sus vecinos continentales. Por otro lado, la dificultad de generar economías de escala por su falta de conexión con el continente por vía terrestre ha sido uno de los principales factores que ha contribuido a frenar la producción inmobiliaria. Los importantes volúmenes de plazas turísticas regladas y el éxito de las viviendas de uso turístico, en paralelo al menor grado de artificialización de la franja costera y de la también menor proliferación de residencias secundarias son algunos de los efectos constatados de la isleidad.
