Compensatory Conscientiousness and Health in Older Couples

Abstract: The present study tested the effect of conscientiousness and neuroticism on health and physical limitations in a representative sample of older couples (N = 2,203) drawn from the Health and Retirement Study. As in past research, conscientiousness predicted better health and physical functioning, whereas neuroticism predicted worse health and physical functioning. Unique to this study was the finding that conscientiousness demonstrated a compensatory effect, such that husbands' conscientiousness predicted wives… Show more

“…Adolescent and adult C likely emerge from childhood temperament, especially sense of constraint, effortful control, and the inhibition of impulsive tendencies, as well as exposure to C behaviors in parents and other socializers (Eisenberg et al, 2014;Hampson, 2012). A substantial body of evidence suggests that childhood disinhibition and impulsivity are associated with externalizing behaviors, including life course persistent antisocial behaviors, and alcohol and substance use beginning in adolescence (see Roberts et al, 2009, for an overview).…”

“…The work of Rutter and his colleagues and of Sampson and Laub-showing that marriage is associated with criminal desistance-originally inspired the concept of compensatory C (Roberts et al, 2009). Although they did not examine C, Sampson and Laub's research suggested that the C of spouses and other intimate partners promote the avoidance of adult snares and perhaps improved choices with respect to family, work, and health behaviors.…”

“…Perhaps there is an important interplay not only between family level losses and an individual family member's personality, but also broader interactions with the personality of others within the family and their individual reactions. For example, dyadic influences of personality traits (Roberts, Smith, Jackson, & Edmond, 2009) may mean that the effect of an income loss for a highly conscientious individual would be lower if they lived with someone low in conscientiousness.…”

“…Some have suggested that neuroticism is healthy when paired with high conscientiousness, a trait that allows individuals to deal productively with stress (Gartland, O'Connor & Lawton, 2012). When paired with high conscientiousness, high neuroticism has been found to predict lower levels of smoking (Turiano et al, 2012) and better physical health (Roberts, Smith, Jackson & Edmonds, 2009;Turiano et al, 2013). Thus, while conscientiousness has consistent associations with positive health -and thus is expected to predict adaptive responses to health news -the links between neuroticism and health are more complex, and so it is unclear whether neuroticism will predict responses or in what direction.…”
