Compatible solutes in three marine intertidal microphytobenthic Wadden Sea diatoms exposed to different salinities

Abstract: Diatoms inhabiting intertidal flats are subject to strongly changing salinities due to exposure to rain and desiccation at low tide. In order to determine the physiological responses of marine benthic diatoms to salinity changes, cultures of Navicula phyllepta, Achnanthes delicatula subsp. hauckiana and Nitzschia constricta, isolated from the Soltho¨rn tidal flat (lower Saxony, southern North Sea), were used to study the effect on growth rates of different salinities (0.5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50). During short (1,… Show more

“…Proline is considered to be involved in the osmotic adjustment of benthic marine diatoms (Scholz & Liebezeit, 2012a). That is, it acts as a compatible osmolyte and functions as a protector of macromolecules such as proteins and membranes, and as a nitrogen-storage compound and energy source after stress release (Aspinall & Paleg, 1981;Delauney & Verma, 1993).…”

“…None of the abiotic parameters determined during the annual cycle provided sufficient explanation for species occurrences. Physiological acclimatization to fluctuating temperatures and salinities was found in several diatom taxa isolated from the Solthörn tidal flat, indicating the ability of single taxa to tolerate such environmental conditions by changes in their biochemical compositions (Scholz & Liebezeit, 2012c, d, 2013. The present study is the first part of an extensive description of the physiological acclimatization potential of five intertidal microphytobenthic diatoms to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) supplemented with UV-A and/or UV-B radiation; the influence of PAR on benthic diatom growth and antioxidative defence strategies is also discussed.…”
