Abstract:A compatible solute is a substance compatible with the cellular metabolism that accumulates in the cytoplasm to balance external osmotic pressure. This accumulation can be due to either transport from the medium or de novo synthesis and helps maintain turgor pressure, cell volume, and concentration of electrolytes, all needed for cell viability and proliferation.
