Compatibility of ceftaroline fosamil for injection with selected drugs during simulated Y-site administration

Abstract: Of the 73 drugs evaluated, 64 were compatible and 7 were incompatible with ceftaroline fosamil 2.22 mg/mL in 3 standard infusion solutions. Nine drugs in 23 admixtures were observed to exhibit signs of incompatibility with ceftaroline fosamil within four hours of mixing; those drugs should not be simultaneously administered via a Y-site with ceftaroline preparations.

“…We also assessed the Trissel's™ 2 Clinical Pharmaceutics Database, a comprehensive database created by Lawrence A. Trissel that includes data for drug–drug and drug‐PN intravenous compatibility. We determined that there was sufficient evidence to support the compatibility recommendations issued in this article with the following drugs: cefepime, ceftazidime, cloxacillin, fosfomycin, meropenem, piperacillin/tazobactam and vancomycin 4,10–13 . However, we need to consider the studied antibiotic concentrations to understand this further and avoid errors.…”

Some drugs can have different compatibility or stability depending on the vehicle or the final concentration, such as meropenem or morphine.…”

“…The analytical grade powder was dissolved with in deionized water to produce stock standard solutions, which are stable for ≥72 hours at 4°C. [ 14 ] The calibration curves were demonstrated by running the standard solutions at 6 different concentrations ranging from 50 to 1000 μg/mL for MSS and 10 to 100 μg/mL for GH.…”
