A systematic approach for providing school-based special service programs is offered. Termed COMPASS, an acronym for Complement,ary Program and Service System, the approach serves a9 a guide for multidisciplinary teams charged with plannin im lementing and evaluating rograms for children with special needs. 8OMJASS has deen used within t i e Somerville (NJ) Public Schools i u well as other school systems. Te paper describes COMPASS so that school professionals might consider its usefulness in relation to their local circumstances.
