Compartmentalization of motor units in the cat neck muscle, biventer cervicis

Abstract: 1. The neck muscle biventer cervicis is supplied by five separate nerve bundles that originate from segments C2-C5 and enter the muscle at different rostrocaudal levels. We have used the glycogen-depletion method to investigate the distribution of muscle fibers supplied by each nerve bundle and also the extent of motor-unit territories supplied by single motoneurons in the C3 segment. 2. Prolonged intermittent stimulation of each nerve bundle produced glycogen depletion in a compartment of muscle fibers that r… Show more

“…In contrast, motor nuclei in cervical segments (including the RH and LS motor nuclei studied here) have a more structured organization in which multiple subsets of motoneurons supplying different muscle regions are arranged in separate, serially ordered subnuclei (Richmond et al, 1978;Abrahams and Keane, 1984;Armstrong et al, 1988;. The boundaries between these subnuclei generally coincide with intersegmental boundaries, but interesting exceptions exist.…”

“…A parallel literature exists with respect to some of the muscles of mastication [see Rowlerson el al.. 1988;Herring, 19921 as well as the complex axial muscles that are affiliated with the vertebral column [see Richmond et al. 1985;Armstrong et al. 1988;Selbie et al.…”

“…The fibers of a motor unit are scattered throughout a broad region (up to several millimeters in diameter, Buchthal et al 1957;Bodine et al 1987) and interdigitate with fibers belonging to many other motor units. The distribution of unit fibers within its territory is relatively uniform (Sffdberg and Antoni 1980) with densities reported to be 2-5 unit fibers/100 fibers (Burke 1981) or 20 unit fibers/mm 2 (Armstrong et al 1988). The unit fiber densities do not appear to depend on the motor unit type (Armstrong et al 1988).…”
