Comparisons of Primary HIV-1 Drug Resistance between Recent and Chronic HIV-1 Infection within a Sub-Regional Cohort of Asian Patients

Abstract: BackgroundThe emergence and transmission of HIV-1 drug resistance (HIVDR) has raised concerns after rapid global antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up. There are limited data on the epidemiology of primary HIVDR in resource-limited settings in Asia. We aimed to determine the prevalence and compare the distribution of HIVDR in a cohort of ART-naïve Asian patients with recent and chronic HIV-1 infection.MethodsMulticenter prospective study was conducted in ART-naïve patients between 2007 and 2010. Resistance-ass… Show more

“…Higher DRM rates, 9.2 and 14.2 , were observed among ART-naïve MSM in Thailand and China, respectively (21,22). Several reports indicate that MSM and IDU groups have higher rates of DRMs than other groups do (20,22,23).…”

“…Treatment-naïve, recently HIV-infected patients were recruited into the TREAT Asia Studies to Evaluate Resistance – Surveillance Study (TASER-S) between 2007-2010 [ 7 ] from 5 participating sites: 2 from Hong Kong SAR, China; 1 from Bangkok, Thailand; 1 from Chiang Mai, Thailand; and 1 from Manila, Philippines. Patients were included in TASER-S according to the following inclusion criteria:…”

“…Individuals who reported nonheterosexual contact as a risk factor were more likely to have drug resistance. 91 Drug resistance peaks at some intermediate level of compliance or effectiveness. 92 One modelling study predicts that even with a very high usage of ART (a median of 70% of HIV-infected men receiving therapy), transmitted resistance would initially increase but would then fairly quickly stabilise at a relatively low level (between 6% and 21%).…”
