“…Evidence suggests that good midwifery practice benefits women (Oakley et al 1995;de Veer &Meijer 1996;Fullerton et al 1996;Oakley et al 1996;Tucker et al 1996;Law &Lam 1999), but accepting that midwives should be encouraged to practise to the full extent of their professional role is not always easy (Blais et al 1994;Cheyne et al 1995;de Veer &Meijer 1996;Fullerton et al 1996;Gau et al 2002;Hyde &Roche-Reid 2004). The evidence from the study suggests that it is imperative for midwives to utilise the European legislation to ensure that Belgium, a member state of the European Union, implements to the full Directive 80/155/EEC on the activities of the midwife.…”

“…Numerous researchers have documented excellent morbidity and mortality outcomes of midwifery care (Blanchette, 1995;Cragin, 2002;Kennedy, 2000;MacDorman & Singh, 1998;Oakley et al, 1996;Raisler, 2000;Rooks et al, 1989). Blanchette (1995) compared birth outcomes of certified nurse-midwives with outcomes of obstetricians working in the same practice.…”

“…The nurse-midwifery care model offers fewer interventions, improved patient satisfaction, and superior morbidity and mortality rates (Blanchette, 1995;Ernst, 1996;Gabay & Wolfe, 1997;Kennedy, Shannon, Chuahorm, & Kravetz, 2004;MacDorman & Singh, 1998;Oakley et al, 1996). Ulrich (2004) noted that providers following the midwifery model of care ''used technology judiciously and focused on the psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects of birth '' (p. 390).…”
