At feed-out, aerobic spoilage of silage enables an increase in anaerobic spore-forming bacteria (ANSB) that may enter the total mixed ration (TMR). The aim of our study was to understand whether in hot summers the silage structures and management may affect the level of ANSB in milk for long-ripening cheese production. A survey of silage facilities, management, and their relationships with silage, TMR, feces, and milk ANSB most probable number (MPN) content was conducted in the Po Valley during summer months. Silo type did not affect the mean ANSB, but only the wideness of their value distributions, with a narrow range for bags and a wider range for bunkers. The unloading equipment affected the ANSB count; the front-end loader with cutter was associated with a lower ANSB count—probably as a result of the reduced surface left after daily silage removal. Silo length and daily removed face width were the main factors affecting contamination of silage by spore-forming bacteria during summer, with longer silos and wider surface removal reducing ANSB contamination—probably as a consequence of reduced aerobic spoilage at the silage surface. The silage contamination by spore-forming bacteria within a log10 2 MPN g−1 allowed a low concentration of spore-forming bacteria at the farm bulk milk tank level. Fecal ANSB levels did not factor into the regression that explains the ANSB in farm milk. It has been found that silage facilities’ features and their management are an important first step to reduce the extent of ANSB contamination at the farm level.

An Automated Template Approach for Generating Web‐Based Conservation Planning Worksheets

An automated web-form generator system was created to rapidly produce dynamic web-based inventory and assessment worksheets that are used by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to describe the condition of natural resources on farms and ranches. These worksheets are used by NRCS as part of the criteria for creating a conservation plan to qualify landowners for payments under the USDA Farm Bill Conservation Title. Presently, most worksheets are filled out by hand or in personal computer spreadsheets. If worksheets such as these were available over the web, landowners could also self-assess the conditions on their farms or ranches before requiring assistance of NRCS conservation planners or technical service providers. Because many conservation worksheets have a similar style and behavior, we created an automated web-script generator that produces a dynamic web-page worksheet from a common template file and a configuration file. A worksheet-specific configuration file provides the details for the worksheet. The template, configuration files, and web scripts are all in PHP (PHP hypertext processor). Each configuration file required approximately 5 h to program, a savings of more than 4 d compared with a web-based worksheet programmed individually with a scripting language. In this way, various conservation worksheets can be quickly created for the web, as well as be easily maintained. As an example, we produced a suite of assessment worksheets used by Oregon NRCS with our automated web-form conservation worksheet system.

Timing Corn Forage Harvest for Bunker Silos

Dairy producers with large operations have switched from upright to bunker silos so they begin corn (Zea mays L.) forage harvest at 300 g kg−1 instead of 350 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) content. Three hybrids were harvested at average DM contents of 295, 310, and 350 g kg−1 to compare DM yield and forage quality of corn forage typical of bunker and upright silos. Hybrid and DM content did not have interactions for DM yield and forage quality characteristics. The DM content at harvest did not affect DM yield (14.6, 15.0, and 15.1 Mg ha−1 at 295, 310, and 350 g kg−1, respectively). As DM content increased, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) declined (469, 447, and 417 g kg−1, respectively), but NDF digestibility (657, 632, and 631 g kg−1) and crude protein (78, 73, and 72 g kg−1) declined only from 295 to 310 g kg−1 As DM content increased, milk per megagram, a forage quality index, increased (1622, 1699, and 1764 kg Mg−1 respectively), but in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) increased (839, 835, and 847 g kg−1), only from 310 to 350 g kg−1 Calculated milk yields differed at DM contents of 295 (24380 kg ha−1) vs. 350 g kg−1 (26947 kg ha−1) but not at 310 g kg−1 (25727 kg ha−1). Results from this study indicate that dairy producers with bunker silos do not compromise DM and calculated milk yields, despite somewhat lower forage quality, if they begin harvest at 310 g kg−1 DM content.
