Comparisons of contact pressures of crowned rollers

Abstract: The present work determines the contact pressure and stress concentration between the crowned roller and the raceway by using three-dimensional finite element analysis. A number of crowned profiles with various dimensions were examined. Fine meshes and node-to-Hermit-surface contact elements were used along the contact surface in order to obtain accurate analysis results. A table was generated to show the stress concentration near the roller edge for various crowned profiles and dimensions. This table indicate… Show more

“…In this case, the distribution of pressures in the inner tracks of the bearing, which are in contact with the rollers, was not studied (in contrast to references [17] and [18]). Rather, the aim was to obtain the distribution of pressures in the axle of the vehicle.…”

“…Furthermore, extensive research was subsequently performed to improve the load-carrying properties of the bearings by modifying the profile of the roller. [6][7][8] According to research, stress concentration at the contact end between the rollers and raceways can be improved by changing the roller/raceway adjustment and applying better modified profiles to the rollers. 9,10 Park 11 researched the impact of roller bearing misalignment on contact stress under the condition of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, and the results showed that under such a condition the contact stress variation caused by roller tilt can be considerable.…”

“…Initial clearance, one of the important design parameters of rolling bearings, influences the load-carrying properties and fatigue life of bearings directly. 1 In the past several decades, a number of researches on roller modification have been reported, [2][3][4] and modification model of cylindrical roller was proposed, such as changing the fitness between roller and raceway, using different modification curves, and so on, 5,6 to make full use of roller length and improve edge stress concentration of rollers effectively. However, since cylindrical roller bearings only bear radial load, its initial clearance could not be eliminated through preloading such as ball bearings.…”
