“…According to the classification of floristic regions (Zohary 1973, Takhtajan 1986, Léonard 1988, 1993, the study area is located in the Irano-Turanian (IT) region. IT elements comprise more than 69% of the flora of the HWR.…”

“…The flora of Iran is influenced by three main floristic regions of the Old World, i.e. Irano-Turanian (IT), Euro-Siberian (ES), and Saharo-Sindian (SS) (Zohary 1973, Léonard 1988, 1993. The mountainous terrain of the NE Iran belongs to an independent floristic province of the IT region, named "Khorassan-Kopet Dagh" (Memariani et al 2016a).…”

“…7300 vascular plant species (Akhani 2006) in 1.65 million square kilometer surface area and is the second richest country of plant diversity in SW Asia after Turkey (Davis et al 1994). The rich flora of Iran is the consequence of the phytogeographical position of Iran among three main floristic regions of the Old World, including Irano-Turanian, Euro-Siberian and Saharo-Sindian, and influencing by Mediterranean and Somalia-Masaei species (Zohary 1973;Léonard 1988Léonard , 1993Akhani & Deil 2012). The mountains and foothills of northeastern parts of Iran belong to Khorassan-Kopet Dagh floristic province of the Irano-Turanian region.…”

“…However, unlike the more north-central Iranian deserts, less than half of the species found in the periphery of this desert belong to the Irano-Turanian endemic species and there is a considerable percentage of plants belonging to other regions. This makes Léonard to define the Lut as a "Local zone of endemic impoverishment" within the "Irano-Turanian regional zone of endemism" (Léonard, 1993). Indeed, 35.6% of the Lut elements belong to the Irano Turanian region while 16.8% to the Saharo-Sindian region, 7.6% to Nubo-Sindian, 4.2% to Somalia-Massai, 0.7% to Indian regions and the rest of the elements are the linking species simultaneously found in several regions.…”
