Comparison of Utilization and Short-term Complications Between Technology-assisted and Conventional Total Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract: Introduction: Although technology-assisted total hip arthroplasty (TA-THA) may improve implant positioning, it remains unknown whether TA-THA confers improved clinical outcomes. We sought to examine national TA-THA utilization trends and compare clinical outcomes between TA-THA and unassisted THA (U-THA). Methods: Patients who underwent primary, elective THA from 2010 to 2018 were identified using the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. Demographic, perioperativ… Show more

“…Several recent studies have evaluated national utilization trends of technology-assisted TJA. 1-8 Bendich et al 4 reported a 32% increase in computer-assisted navigation and 2,204% increase in robotic-assisted TKA utilization in the United States between 2010 and 2018, with 9.7% of all TKAs conducted in 2018 using some form of technology. Similar trends have been documented for THA (4.0% technology-assisted).…”

“…Using the American College of Surgeons (ACS) NSQIP database, Simcox et al recently investigated the real-world application of technology-assisted THA 25 . Among the 238,755 patients in the database who underwent THA, 3,149 cases (1.3%) were found to have been performed using either computer navigation or robotics.…”
