Comparison of ultrasound and ketoprofen phonophoresis in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome

Abstract: Ketoprofen PH as adjuvant therapy on splinting is effective with respect to reduction of pain. Adding US therapy to the splinting is not superior to the splinting alone in patients with CTS.

“…3 Multiple studies have examined methods for improving the specificity and sensitivity of NCT and EMG, whereas others have examined different modalities such as ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 11,[29][30][31][32] Ultrasound has recently been used, allowing the technician to demonstrate flattening of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel. Some studies have supported its use to indicate surgery when there are persisting pain and dysesthesia despite conservative measures and a normal NCT and EMG.…”

“…PP with NSAIDs has been reported to treat pain and inflammation in many musculoskeletal conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, myofascial pain, neck pain, impingement, muscle injury, and knee OA (10,(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Advantages of this method include noninvasiveness, minimal risk of adverse effects associated with systemic administration of NSAIDs, and the combined therapeutic effects of both US and NSAIDs.…”

“…The PP therapy is used predominantly in musculoskeletal disorders such as myofascial pain syndrome, knee OA, carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondylitis, impingement, and tenosynovitis (10,(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Despite extensive clinical trials of PP, questions remain regarding treatment effectiveness (10,(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20)(21). There are no FP guidelines recommending PP and capsaicin in the treatment of knee OA.…”

“…В іншому рандомізованому клінічному дослідженні за допомогою біопсії післяопераційного біоматеріалу (артропластика колінних суглобів) підтверджено вплив ультразвуку на ефективність транспорту кетопрофену в навколосуглобові тканини та синовіальну рідину [13]. Не менш ефективною ця комбінація була в лікуванні стенозуючого тендовагініту, латерального епікондиліту та синдрому субакроміального конфлікту [19,20,21,22].…”
