Comparison of Ultrasonography, Computerized Tomography and Angiography in Dialysis Patients with Renal Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Seventeen dialysis patients with renal cell carcinoma were examined preoperatively by ultrasonography, computerized tomography (CT) and angiography. Ultrasonography, CT and angiography correctly predicted the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma in 17 (100%) and 12 (71%) of 17, and 11 (69%) of 16 patients, respectively. All renal tumors of more than 3.0 cm in diameter were detected by the three diagnostic procedures. However, ultrasonography, CT and angiography detected renal tumors of less than 3.0 cm in 12 (100… Show more

“…In a recent study comparing US, CT, and angiography for detecting RCC in a selected population of dialysis patients, the accuracy of angiography was 69 % for tumors > 3 cm in diameter and 55 % for tumors < 3 cm in diameter. Angiography is accurate in depicting tumors over 3.0 cm in diameter, but it is less accurate in detecting smaller tumors [9], with a sensitivity inferior to that of both CT and US.…”

“…Computed tomography can provide diagnosis in cases with uncertain ultrasonographic findings [9,10]. Magnetic resonance imaging is not necessary to diagnose ACKD, but it can help to further characterize an indeterminate renal mass discovered on CT; presently, it may be proposed to evaluate the extent of this disease.…”

“…Insgesamt liegen nur einzelne vergleichende Studien über die bildgebende Diagnostik der Nieren unter Langzeitdialyse vor. Sasagawa et al [10] beschrieben hierbei einen Vorteil der Sonographie bei Dialysepatienten allgemein. Eine Differenzierung zwischen Patienten mit unterschiedlichen Grundkrankheiten ist jedoch auch aufgrund der geringen geschilderten Patientenzahl nicht möglich.…”
