Comparison of transmission efficiency of various isolates of Potato virus Y among three aphid vectors

Abstract: Potato virus Y (PVY) strains are transmitted by different aphid species in a non‐persistent, non‐circulative manner. Green peach aphid (GPA), Myzus persicae Sulzer, is the most efficient vector in laboratory studies, but potato aphid (PA), Macrosiphum euphorbiae Thomas (both Hemiptera: Aphididae, Macrosiphini), and bird cherry‐oat aphid (BCOA), Rhopalosiphum padi L. (Hemiptera: Aphididae, Aphidini), also contribute to PVY transmission. Studies were conducted with GPA, PA, and BCOA to assess PVY transmission ef… Show more

“…In some cases, noncolonizing aphids (aphids that do not reproduce on potato, such as the bird cherry‐oat aphid) play a major role in PVY transmission, despite the fact that they are transient in the field (Mondal et al. ). Under these circumstances, the rate of vector departure from infected hosts is likely to be of overriding importance for pathogen spread, supporting the notion that behavior may play a central role in the transmission of nonpersistent viruses.…”

“…Co-infection with virus strains differing in virulence (or other characteristic) can lead to the same set of interactions and consequences as found with virus species. A good example of two strains of the same virus species with shared vector species is potato virus Y (PVY) [21][22][23] on potato and other hosts [15]. There are many examples of two co-infecting virus species with a shared vector species [24][25][26].…”

“…Кроме того, в качестве переносчиков вирусов кар тофеля в литературе приводится обширный список других видов. Так, вследствие довольно слабой способности злаковых тлей отличать кормовое растение от некормо вого, эти вредители могут быть важными переносчиками вирусных заболеваний картофеля (Wiktelius, 1982;Mondal et al, 2016).…”
