Comparison of total variation algorithms for electrical impedance tomography

Abstract: Abstract. The applications of Total Variation (TV) algorithms for Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) have been investigated. The use of the TV regularisation technique helps to preserve discontinuities in reconstruction, such as the boundaries of perturbations and sharp changes in conductivity, which are unintentionally smoothed by traditional 2 l norm regularisation. However, the non-differentiability of TV regularisation has led to the use of different algorithms. Recent advances in TV algorithms such as … Show more

“…However, the objective function of TV regularization (equations ( 20 ) and ( 21 )) can not be effectively solved by traditional linearization techniques because it is non-differential. For this problem, previous research works have verified that the split Bregman (SB) iterative algorithm was effective to split the data fidelity term and the non-differential l 1 -norm penalty term of the objective function to a sequence of unconstrained problems which can be easily solved 19 . So, the SB method is used in this work.…”

“…The algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) is a simple and effective image reconstruction method for computerized tomography that can be applied to EIT [16], [17]. Other important methods include regularization via the total variation (TV) functional [18], [19], which allows image reconstruction with edge preservation.…”

“…However, most algorithms would give a result with blurred edges of the object boundary, and lead to reconstruction error because Tikhonov would over-smooth the images. In the past years, another method called total variation (TV) with different TV functions, such as, [ 4 , 5 ] has been proposed. TV has attracted attention, as higher-quality images can be obtained.…”
