“…Detection of GBS antigen in urine or other body fluids by latex particle agglutination (LPA) may facilitate the rapid diagnosis of GBS sepsis. GBS LPA assays have been reported to be 88 to 100% sensitive and 81 to 100% specific (2,4,6,8,10,12,13) and are commercially available in three assays: Wellcogen (Wellcome Diagnostics, Research Triangle Park, N.C.), Directigen (Becton-Dickinson Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md. ), and Bactigen (Wampole Laboratories, Cranbury, N.J.).…”

“…Whether the Directigen GBS test is comparable to or better than Wellcogen Strep B LA will require side-by-side testing of clinical specimens. Previous reports concerning the latter indicate comparable sensitivity (90 to 100%) and specificity (88.7 to 96.4%) (2,5,6,8). Both assays provide for positive and negative latex controls to allow for immediate assessment of nonspecific reactions, and both require heating of urine specimens to provide for the best specificity (2).…”

“…In simultaneous testing of specimens, Directigen was significantly more sensitive than CIE (94.7 versus 68.4%) in identifying infants with culture proven GBS infection before culture results were available. Concentrated (10-fold) urine was the single best specimen for antigen detection by LA (100% sensitivity), a sensitivity which compares favorably with results from other LA reagents in the testing of 25to 50-fold-concentrated urine specimens (2,6,8). However, the use of Directigen has the potential advantage of evaluating patients with only small quantities of urine available for testing, since only a 10-fold concentration is required.…”

“…The assay which has been evaluated the most is the Wellcogen Strep B LPA assay. The sensitivity of this assay was initially reported to range from 88 to 100% (4,11,15,17).…”
