Comparison of three instruments assessing the quality of economic evaluations: A practical exercise on economic evaluations of the surgical treatment of obesity

Abstract: The study shows that the results of the quality assessment of economic evaluations are not so much influenced by the instrument used but more by the assessor. Therefore, quality assessments should be performed by at least two independent experts and final scoring based on consensus.

“…Several different checklists have been developed to assess the quality of economic evaluations [70,71,[73][74][75], but Gerkens et al showed that the results of quality assessment of EE are not so much influenced by the instrument used, but more so by the assessor [76]. The choice of Drummond's scale as a scoring system has the advantage of allowing comparison between various studies and their results, and it is more objective.…”

“…33,34 There can be significant heterogeneity in study design (eg, trial analyses versus modeling), costing methods, discounting, measures of effectiveness, mechanisms for quality adjustment, and time horizons. 21,[33][34][35][36][37][38] It is recommended that the quality of each economic study considered be assessed using a standard, validated tool. The Quality of Health Economic Studies (QHES) instrument (Table 1) 33 is one available tool to assess the quality of economic studies.…”

“…Because instruments for assessing the quality of cost-effectiveness analyses have, in general, been found to have poor interrater reliability [26], we established a protocol for using the QHES specifically for this review (see Appendix 2 of the Supplemental Materials at doi: 10.1016/j.jval.2011.09.003).
