Comparison of thiopental and ketamine+xylazine anesthesia inischemia/reperfusion-induced arrhythmias in rats

Abstract: Background/aim: To investigate the influence of thiopental (85 mg/kg, intraperitoneally (ip)), and ketamine+xylazine (ketamine 75 mg/kg and xylazine 8 mg/kg, ip) anesthesia on the incidence and duration of ischemia/reperfusion-induced arrhythmias.Materials and methods: Myocardial ischemia was induced by a 6-min ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery, followed by a 6-min reperfusion. Measurements were taken of the incidence and duration of ventricular arrhythmias, the mean arterial blood press… Show more

“…Prior to in vivo electrophysiological studies, anaesthesia was induced using intramuscular injection of tiletamine/zolazepam (4-8 mg kg −1 ) only, to prevent anti-arrhythmic effects induced by xylazine (Gonca, 2015). Maintenance of anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation were performed as described above.…”

“…Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein and sera were separated. Rats were euthanized using thiopental (85 mg/kg; i. p.; Gonca, 2015 ). The liver was divided into 2 parts; one part was kept in 10% neutral formalin, whereas the second part was stored in −80°C.…”

“…Due to its restricted therapeutic index, thiopental use should be limited to situations in which other anesthetics are not recommended (Tagawa and Sakuraba 2014;Gonca 2015). Accordingly, although previous anesthesia with thiopental preceding behavioral evaluation related to depression and anxiety had proved to be suitable, this anesthetic should be chosen with caution.…”
