Comparison of therapeutic results in sudden sensorineural hearing loss with/without additional hyperbaric oxygen therapy: a retrospective review of 465 audiologically controlled cases

Abstract: When applied as an adjuvant to pharmacologic agents, hyperbaric oxygen benefits patients with initial profound sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Therefore, we recommend the routine application of hyperbaric oxygen in conjunction with pharmacologic agents for those patients. The addition of dextran to steroid has no benefit and cannot be recommended.

“…Combination of HBO and steroid therapy compared to steroid therapy alone significantly improved hearing outcome [25] . The addition of HBO therapy to primaryconventional therapy improved the results when started early after the onset of SSNHL and was more successful in patients with a hearing loss greater than 60 dB [15] .…”

“…The dosing regimens used in the current study are in agreement with steroid dosing regimens used in other studies, including those evaluating the use of steroids in treating SSNHL in Taiwanese patients and other regions of the world. One regimen found to be effective in treating SSNHL in Taiwanese patients used IV dexamethasone 12 mg for 3 days, followed by decreasing doses of 8 mg for 2 days, 4 mg for 1 day, and then outpatient oral prednisone 20 mg/day for 8 days [Liu et al, 2011]. Two studies evaluated oral prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day that was administered for 4 or 7 days and then gradually tapered [Wang et al, 2012;Chen et al, 2015].…”
