Comparison of the Success Rate of Endodontic Treatment and Implant Treatment

Abstract: Dentists and patients are facing a perplexity between saving a compromised tooth through endodontic treatment and restoration or by extraction and replacement with an implant. The purpose of this paper was to compare the success rates of these two treatments. Success was measured as the longevity of the tooth or implant. Studies which met strict inclusion criteria to ensure best evidence were included. Searches were performed in Ovid Medline, Pubmed, Scopus database, and the Cochrane Library. Evidence-based gr… Show more

“…The reasons for the less favorable outcomes of endodontically treated teeth lie not so much in the prosthetic treatment as in the complications and sequelae of the endodontic treatment itself. According to Elemam and Pretty, the success rate of primary endodontic treatment is about 86% [17]. Looking at the additional effect of placing an endodontic post, possible complications such as a fracture or debonding of the pin [18] must be taken into account, which can adversely affect the success rate.…”

“…Dental implants have been reported to have higher success rates than removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures, and root canal therapy followed by single crowns, but the differences in success are small in cases of teeth deemed predictably restorable (27,35). Implants boast survival rates greater than 96%, but as with all dental treatments, they are prone to complications (both prosthetic and biologic) (36).…”
