Comparison of the Structure and Porous Texture of Alumina Gels Synthesized by Different Methods

Abstract: Alumina gels are synthesized by different methods. Those methods include the drying of xerogels by simple evaporation either in water or in an another solvent, the supercritical drying either in alcohol at 260 °C or in CO2, after hydrolysis in an organic solvent in order to make aerogels, and the supercritical drying either in methanol or in CO2, after hydrolysis in excess water followed by exchange of the initial water for another organic solvent. These three different synthesis procedures result in different… Show more

“…Aluminum oxide is widely used in industry, for example, for re"ning petroleum (1}4), as a substrate in integrated circuits (5), or for reducing pollution (6). Considering atom ordering in its crystalline structure, this oxide can be classi-"ed into two groups: the one represented by alpha alumina with its atoms in a hexagonal arrangement (7) and the group of the transitional aluminas ( -, -, -, -, and -alumina), where atoms are ordered in a spinel-based structure (8).…”
