Comparison of the sociodemographic characteristics of the large NutriNet-Santé e-cohort with French Census data: the issue of volunteer bias revisited

Abstract: There were notable sociodemographic differences between the general French population and this general population-based e-cohort, some of which were corrected by statistical weighting. The findings bear on the potential generalisability of future investigations in the context of e-epidemiology.

“…Our findings are based on 12 studies investigating characteristics and representativeness of the sample [28], comparison of dietary data with national findings [31], recruitment [32], motives for participation [33], Internet or computer skills [34], and quality of the data [23-27,35,36]. …”

“…In order to provide a detailed presentation of the sociodemographic profiles of the study population, characteristics of 122,912 NutriNet-Santé participants (recruited between 2009 and 2014) were compared with data from the French 2009 Census [28]. Moreover, the impact of a statistical weighting method developed to enhance the representativeness of descriptive or analytical results was evaluated, using the SAS macro “CALMAR (CALage sur MARges)” provided by the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques (INSEE) [29].…”

“…This was not unexpected, given our prior experience and the large number of questionnaires administered in this e-cohort 41 42. It should be noted, however, that a comparison with national Census figures has revealed differences between the general French population and the NutriNet-Santé e-cohort, especially regarding marital status and the proportions of women and relatively well-educated individuals 43. Finally, the findings regarding restrictive ED in men should be interpreted with caution due to the small number of cases and the subsequent unstable estimates.…”

“…Moreover, a prior study comparing the sociodemographic characteristics of the NutriNet-Santé volunteers with the corresponding national estimates (2009 French Census), revealed convergence regarding the geographical distribution and divergence regarding the sex distribution and educational level, with the cohort including higher proportions of women and relatively well-educated individuals compared with the national figures [46]. Likewise, the proportion of individuals aged 65+ years was over three times smaller in the cohort than in the general population [46]. In turn, despite decreasing sociodemographic disparities, the proportion of elderly Internet users is smaller than the respective proportions of young and middle-aged users.…”
