The formation of Universal Social Moral Values (USMV) is considered as one of the backbone of the Malaysian education curriculum to create harmonious individuals living in the society regardless of religion, race and belief. Nevertheless, the inculcation of these social moral values is not clearly seen in the Arabic grammar curriculum even though the main source for the curriculum comes from the al-Quran, which is loaded with values. On that account, this research analyses verses of the al-Quran containing USMV. At the same time, this research attempts to prove the universality of these values, the matching of community values according to the major religions in Malaysia such as Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative approach through content analysis is used to describe the USMV that takes place deductively and inductively in the al-Quran. The findings of the study reveal that Mutual Respect and Humility are two universal social moral values in the Malaysian context that may be used as curriculum material for Arabic-Quranic Grammar in the framework of value-based education.

Education curricula are programs that include topics for students’ academic achievement and individual development. Geography curricula cover many subjects such as physical, human, economic and environmental issues. In this study, the economic geography contents of Turkey and Turkmenistan high school geography curricula were compared in the study. Firstly, the content of 10th, 11th and 12th grades in the geography programs of both countries was investigated and evaluated. The study is qualitative in nature as it is mainly based on document analysis. Economic geography topics in geography programs according to grade levels were examined and the similarities and differences between the economic geography subjects in the geography programs of both countries were determined. In both countries, economic geography subjects are included in the 12-year compulsory education, especially after the 10th grade. Moreover, both programsinclude economic geography topics from a local to global scale.

Scrutinizing Values-Based Education in Secondary Grade EFL Coursebooks

The study aims to expand the understanding of values and values-based teaching in the English language teaching community by scrutinizing English as a foreign language (EFL) coursebooks and the secondary grade curriculum. This is a qualitative study with a document analysis design. The data in the form of EFL coursebooks were examined, interpreted and coded to elicit meaning and gain understanding about the presentation of values residing in four coursebooks. The results of the study indicated that the values presented in secondary level EFL coursebooks do not show an equal distribution and the target values serve the purpose of raising awareness of learners about different values rather than allowing them to understand, internalize and discuss these values at higher levels of learning, which makes the process only superficial. Integrating the teaching of values into the curriculum of language learning classes has been an area of interest in recent years and the Turkish Ministry of Education (MoNE) revised its curriculum in 2018 and textbooks were written in 2019 in accordance with the requirements of the national curricula. Detailed analysis of the teaching of values and their distribution in these coursebooks might help curriculum planners and coursebook writers as well as teachers.
