Comparison of the quantitative performance of a Q‐Exactive high‐resolution mass spectrometer with that of a triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer for the analysis of illicit drugs in wastewater

Abstract: The Q-Exactive mass spectrometer proved to be suitable for trace detection and quantification of most of the tested drugs in wastewater, with performance comparable to that of the commonly used MS/MS triple quadrupole, but with better selectivity.

“…Despite the uniqueness of such a solution, HRFS still suffers from false positive results (data not shown). Such conclusions are in good agreement with previous data [17,19,20]. As described previously [17,20], HRFS MS is also not equally matrixtolerant as quadrupole-based MS/MS.…”

“…The pooled water samples were analyzed in triplicate. The extraction and analysis were performed in one step using in line SPE liquid chromatography coupled with a hybrid mass spectrometer (MS) Q-Exactive (quadrupole coupled to high resolution orbital trap MS, Thermo Scientific) as it is described previously (Fedorova et al 2013). Isotope dilution and internal standard method together with matrixmatched standards were used to eliminate matrix effects.…”

“…Nowadays, highresolution instruments such as the quadrupole time of flight (Q-TOF) or the Orbitrap are routinely used in urine analysis as screening tools for doping (Li et al 2013;Musenga and Cowan 2013;Sundström et al 2013). However, few methods have been implemented for the analysis of illicit drugs in wastewaters Fedorova et al 2013) despite clear advantages offered by full-scan HRMS such as enabling the screening of previously-acquired data for drugs of abuse that are identified after initial data processing has occurred.…”
